Summary

From mid-November to mid-July, I offer a Grand Lagoon Tour, exploring the North and Northwest coast, somewhere between Haapiti and Pihaena, as shown in the photo. The exact route depends on the weather. The captain will choose the best itinerary based on wind, swell, and cloud conditions.

Each outing is unique, but here’s what they typically include:

The tours last between 3.5 and 4.5 hours, depending on the weather conditions (such as swell, wind, or current) and how long we spend at each spot (between 5 and 25 minutes), as well as the time spent swimming with marine life.
We do not feed the animals — we are eco-responsible and do not intervene in their natural behavior.

Options the captain may choose based on the weather:

Visit shells in their natural habitat (queen conch).
Watch the surfing waves at Haapiti.
Swim in the deep blue ocean and maybe spot a lemon shark.
Exit through one pass and re-enter through another to explore the open ocean (watching for hunting birds, flying fish, turtles, and sometimes pelagic fish).
Enter Opunohu Bay or just explore its pass.

We will also search for dolphins, usually found around the passes. Encounters are very likely but depend on weather conditions. The most common species are spinner dolphins or stenella, which are elusive; you’ll observe them from the boat’s water-level net.

Tour description

There will be plenty of scenic spots to photograph: mountains, valleys, bays, and coral gardens.
We will make several stops in the water to swim in a channel with turtles and leopard rays, then at a sandbank where you can stand and observe stingrays and small lagoon sharks.
Another stop will be at a coral garden in a protected reserve, where you can snorkel and see colorful fish, although going into the water is optional.
We will also search for dolphins during the tour.

We'll book again - We went with Maire on four tours in September.

All four tours were very different regarding to communication and the whale experiences.

Regarding communication we were missing a bit at the first tour. How to act in the water and how the tour was going to be.
This was not the case on the other tours and we did learn to just ask if we were en doubt of anything. Or to let them know if we needed anything.

Regarding the whales they managed to find the whales all four days, which was excellent.
This company know the whales and they know when to keep extra distance in order to not disturb mom and calf. They don't bother the whales if there too many other companies in the water. Just being respectful.

All in all we had really good times and we'll book again for sure.
Maire was very friendly and helped us out even after our tours were finished. We really appreciate that.

Our advice to people going on the whale tour:
- Bring your own mask and fins. When you have gear they fits you 100% you'll have a better experience. They do have stuff to borrow but it might not fit you.
- Let them know if you are in doubt of anything.
- Be quick to get into the water and be close to the guide the guide.
